4 Hacks for Packing a Portable Storage Unit for All Types of Weather

by Dusty Rhodes | Jan 09, 2019

Whether you are downsizing to a smaller space and need room to store your extra furniture, or you are moving a long distance and need somewhere to store your belongings during the transition, renting a storage unit can be a convenient and cost effective solution.  While it might seem simple enough to just pack up your belongings and lock the unit, there are several hacks that can help you get the most out of your storage unit while ensuring your belongings are safe in all types of weather. To help make your packing as safe and efficient as possible, here are a few hacks that can help you as you begin the packing process.

Clean, Wrap, & Protect

Not only do you want to get all of your stuff inside the storage unit, but you want to make sure it is well protected while it is packed away.  Moisture, dirt, and temperatures can cause damage to you belongings so you want to keep this in mind when packing.  It is important to disassemble all furniture if possible and wrap it in tarps or moving blankets to protect it from moisture.  If you happen to be moving in rain or snow you would want to keep your furniture and belongings wrapped so they are not exposed to moisture.  Likewise, storage bins that have lids are a great way to keep smaller belongings safe from moisture during the moving and packing process.   If your belongings do happen to get wet, be sure to clean and dry them prior to storage.

Use Pallets on the Floor

A portable storage unit is going to be exposed to outdoor weather conditions so you want to take extra precautions to keep your belongings safe.  One way to do this is by using pallets to keep your belonging off the floor.  While the units are designed not to let moisture inside, it’s possible that moisture can be brought in during the packing process, especially if you are loading the unit in the rain or snow.  You could rent or purchase pallets from a local hardware store or distribution center that might have a few extra on hand. If pallets aren’t available, consider placing a tarp on the floor.

Safeguard Against Temperature Fluctuation

Even though your items will be stored inside the unit, portable units aren’t typically climate-controlled.  This means certain belongings could be affected by humidity and extreme temperature changes.  Take extra precaution with items such as electronics, photographs, paperwork, and vinyl by tightly wrapping them in a double layer of plastic covering.  Be sure all electronics are properly covered and wrapped to protect against exposure to humidity and extreme temperatures.

Use Vacuum Sealed Bags

Items that are especially susceptible to damage from humidity are things like blankets, sheets, pillows, and clothing.  Moisture and humidity can cause these items to mildew.  Luckily, you can provide added protection against moisture and humidity by storing these items in a vacuum sealed bag and then placing them in a plastic bin for extra protection.
