When you are thinking about the moving process, it’s hard not to get discouraged and tired just thinking about everything that has to be done. Packing up your entire home and moving it to a new location is no easy feat. Though it is a hard and tedious task, there are things you can do to simplify and speed up the process. Consider these tips for making packing a speedier and more enjoyable experience.

9 Simple Ways to Speed Up the Packing Process

1) Sort and Purge

It’s a simple concept: the less you have, the faster you can pack it. Therefore, take the time to go through each room in your house and get rid of any broken or unwanted items. There is no sense in packing up items you no longer need or use so save yourself some time by getting rid of them on the front end.

2) Start Early

You might not think it matters when you start packing as long as it’s done by moving day, but the sooner you start, the more time you will have to go through your belongings. You certainly don’t need any additional pressure to pack in a hurry. By starting early, you will eliminate stress and be able to pack more efficiently.

3) Get All Necessary Materials

Don’t wait until you are ready to start packing to gather packing materials. This will slow you down if you have to keep stopping to buy more boxes and tape. Rather, make a list of all necessary materials including boxes, tape, packing paper, and bubble wrap and stock up in advance. This way, you are organized and ready to go come packing day.

4) Set Deadlines

Moving day should not be your deadline to finish packing. It should be well before that. Several weeks prior to moving day, make a list of everything you need to do and when you plan to do it. Set real dates as your deadlines to finish packing each room in the house and stick to it. This will keep you on track and ensure the process is smooth and efficient.

5) One Room at a Time

The thought of packing your entire home can be overwhelming so you can simplify the process by breaking it down into smaller tasks. Take it one room at a time, starting with the easiest room. This will help you build momentum as you see results. You will actually accomplish more by taking it one step at a time because you can avoid burnout.

6) Move Some Belongings Earlier

The process of packing involves several back and forth trips between homes so you can speed up this process by moving some of your belongings earlier. A great way to get ahead on packing is by renting a portable storage container. This serves as a great place to store furniture and boxes ahead of time so you have less to pack come moving day.

7) Consolidate Your Belongings

You can save a great deal of time by keeping items in their place. Don’t you already have items in drawers? Why take them out of your dresser just to repack them in another box? Instead, tape the drawers shut and leave items alone that are already packed in drawers, boxes, or baskets. You can also load up suitcases, hampers, pots, and baskets with items, using blankets or sheets instead of packing paper.

8) Stay Organized

A systematic packing process can greatly increase efficiency. Organize your boxes by room and make sure they are properly labeled. Proper organization will save you a lot of time sifting through boxes later, wondering where everything got packed.

9) Enlist the Help of Family and Friends

This is perhaps the best way to speed up the packing process: get as much help as you can. Bribe your friends and family with pizza and beer and make it a little more fun (and a whole lot faster!)
