How to Organize a Storage Unit

by Dusty Rhodes | Feb 24, 2021

Not having an organized storage container can cause a lot of issues, especially when trying to find something. Here are expert tips on how to organize your storage container.

Storage units provide an easy and convenient solution for those in need of temporary or long-term storage. Whether you are moving, renovating, or just organizing your home, a storage unit is a great way to store all of your belongings in a safe and secure place. Do be mindful, however, of how you pack items in your storage unit.

Especially if you plan to access it frequently, you want to be sure your storage unit is neatly organized so you can find the items you need. Before packing your storage unit, consider the following tips for maximizing space while efficiently storing your belongings.

  1. Create a list of inventory.

When you are packing several items in a storage unit, it’s difficult to remember everything you have packed. While it may be easy to see larger items such as furniture and appliances, it’s tough to keep track of all those smaller items that have been packed in boxes. To help you remember, create a list of items that you are storing and save it on a spreadsheet for easy access.

  2. Choose the right boxes.

Depending on your storage needs, you want to be sure you have the correct boxes. If you are going to be storing your items temporarily, cardboard boxes should suffice. When using cardboard boxes, try choosing one size for most items, as they will stack easier than multiple sizes. If you are storing items long-term, consider investing in plastic bins. Not only are they sturdier, but they stack easier and their lid helps to prevent dirt, moisture, and bugs from getting inside.

  3. Identify items you might need to access.

Before placing anything in your storage unit, consider the items that you might need to access regularly. This may include things like clothing, sports equipment, holiday decorations, tools, kids, toys, or even office documents. It’s important to set these items aside so you can be sure they are packed in the front of the unit for easy access.

  4. Disassemble furniture and store it upright.

In order to maximize space in your storage unit, you want to disassemble any large furniture prior to storing it. This includes bed frames, headboards, table legs, and any other furniture that can be taken apart. It is recommended that you store these items upright (except for mattresses which should be stored flat) to make room for other items.

  5. Label your boxes.

Before placing any boxes inside your storage unit, be sure they are labeled. You should label boxes either with a permanent marker or printed label. Make sure the labeled part is facing the front of the unit, so it can easily be seen.

  6. Store heaviest items on the bottom.

As you begin packing items in your storage unit, start with the heaviest items and pack those first. Things like furniture and heavy boxes should be stored in the back of the unit at the bottom. You should never store heavy boxes on top of lighter ones, as this will crush the lighter boxes.

  7. Pack vertically.

When packing your storage unit, you want to go vertical as much as possible to conserve space. Boxes should be stacked on top of one another and furniture should be placed upright. It can also be helpful to consider adding shelving to help with vertical storage. Packing vertically can also help to create a walking path so you can easily navigate through your storage unit.
