MOVING TIPS

Moving not only takes an emotional toll, but it can also take a physical toll as well. Many people are not accustomed to heavy lifting and hard labor, and moving loads of boxes and heavy furniture can put tremendous strain on the body. That’s why it’s important to be aware of common moving injuries and what you can do to prevent them. The best thing you can do is to start planning and packing well in advance, so you don’t have to rush the process. Injuries can happen in an instant, especially when people are tired, stressed, or in a hurry. Here we will take a look at some of the most common moving related injuries so you can take the right steps to prevent them.

1. Strained Back

A strained back is perhaps the most common moving related injury. A strained back is caused by lifting heavy objects. The best way to avoid back injuries is to learn proper lifting techniques.

●Position your feet shoulder-width apart, keep you back straight, and use your legs to lower yourself.

●Avoid bending at the waist and instead bend at the knees while keeping your back upright.

●Don’t overload your moving boxes, as this will make them too heavy to carry.

●Ask for help or use a dolly for heavy items and furniture.

2. Broken Fingers and Toes

Another common moving injury is broken appendages, such as fingers and toes. This is usually the result of people dropping heavy items during the move. You can avoid this by making sure not to pack your boxes too heavy, and only lifting what you know you can handle. Also, be sure to wear thick gloves and closed-toe shoes to protect your fingers and toes.

3. Knee and Ankle Injuries

Moving involves a lot of lifting, carrying, pulling, and dragging and it only takes one wrong step to twist your ankle or buckle your knee. These types of injuries are also common around stairs and during rainy or icy weather conditions when it’s easier to slip and fall. You can avoid knee injury by using knee braces and pads and you can protect your ankles by wearing close-toed shoes with a good grip. You should also avoid moving heavy objects during bad weather.

4. Cuts and Scrapes

Cuts and scrapes are also very common injuries that can occur when moving. Although most of these are minor, it is extremely important to take precautions to avoid more serious problems. Be extra careful when packing sharp objects such as knives, tools, glassware, or other breakables. If they are not packed correctly, you could end up with scratches or lacerations from sharp edges. Always wear protective clothing, which includes long pants, a long sleeve shirt, gloves, and close-toed shoes. Always be sure to wrap sharp items as safely as possible.

5. Muscle Strains and Tears

Moving is a very strenuous activity and can put a tremendous strain on muscles and connective tissues. This can result in cramps, strains, tears, and contusions. The best way to avoid these types of injuries is by stretching and exercising to warm up the body before doing any heavy lifting. Cold muscles are more prone to injury. You also want to stay hydrated, take plenty of breaks, and use proper moving equipment so you don’t overexert your body.

6. Hernias

Hernias are ruptures or tears in the abdominal wall that result from tissue weakness and strain. Lifting heavy objects is one of the most common reasons for hernias, and this can result in serious injury, sometimes even requiring surgery. Therefore, take the right precautions to avoid straining your muscles, starting with proper lifting techniques. You also want to make sure you use quality moving boxes, and always use proper moving equipment when necessary. For added protection, you can even wear a belt that provides extra support around your abdominal area.
