Whether you are moving or just in need of a little extra storage space, portable storage containers provide a convenient and cost-effective way of storing your household belongings.  However, there are many factors to consider when choosing a portable storage company and many people need a little guidance in asking the right questions.  Here are a few things you need to ask in order to be sure you find a portable storage company that is just right for you.

What is the price? Are there any hidden fees?

It seems like the most obvious question, but it is important to ask the storage company specific questions about their pricing.  Some companies will quote you a flat rate, only to surprise you with additional surcharges and fees when you get ready to pay.  Before having your storage container delivered, make sure you know EXACTLY what the cost will be and whether or not you are locked into a contract or have the flexibility to rent it on a month-to-month basis.

How large is the storage unit?

Different companies offer different sized units and this is important to consider, as it could be reflected in the price.  Be sure to discuss your storage needs with a customer service representative and let them assist you in deciding how much space you are going to need.

Where will the storage container be placed?

It is understandable that most people don’t want a giant storage container plopped down in their front yard.  Homeowners should speak with the company to find out what options they have for placement.  Most people choose the back of their driveway so they can still park their cars in the garage.

Are the containers weatherproof?

When you store your belongings in a storage container, you want to be sure that they are protected against moisture.  Not every company offers weather-resistant containers so it is always important to ask.  Before packing up your valuable possessions, you need to know if they will be safe from outdoor elements.

Are your belongings insured?

Oftentimes this depends on where the storage container is being held.  If it is on your property, many homeowners’ policies will cover items stored in a container.  If your storage container is being held at the company’s storage facility, the company may offer you insurance options to cover your belongings while they are in storage.

Can the storage container be locked?

Again, the safety of your belongings is your number one priority.  Be sure to ask about security for your storage container.  Does it come with a lock?  If it is being kept at the company’s facility, is there security?  It is important to have piece if mind when storing your belongings somewhere other than your home.
