Santa makes a list and checks it twice so why shouldn’t you? When it comes to moving, there is no doubt that checklists are a must.  Even professionals don’t make it happen without a game plan, so don’t try moving your entire life without one in your back pocket.   Whether you are moving across the country or just across town, a list can help you make sure you get everything done before, during, and after your move. Here are five lists you should make in order to simplify your moving day.

Moving Budget Checklist
There is no question that moving can definitely put a strain on your wallet, and what could be worse than running out of money in the middle of your house moving transition? Avoid unexpected financial roadblocks by creating a moving budget.  There are many things to consider when detailing your moving budget so consider the following expenses:

-Relocation cost: This includes whether or not to hire movers or go the DIY route.  Depending on how far you are moving and how much stuff you will be taking will determine which route to go.  Be sure to get a few different in-home estimates before settling on a moving company.

-Insurance: You want to check with your moving company to see if insurance is included.  Even if basic coverage is included, you might want to add additional coverage for your valuable items.

-Packing Supplies: You will definitely need boxes, packing tape, packing paper, and bubble wrap and the cost for the supplies can quickly add up.

-Truck rentals: If you are choosing to move yourself, you will need to factor in the cost of a truck rental.

-Storage: Decide whether or not you will need a portable storage unit or an on-site storage facility to store your belongings during the moving process.

Create a Timeline
Moving is a stressful time so it can be difficult to remember every little thing that needs to be done.  More importantly, you will need to be sure that things are completed on time.  Putting together a moving timeline can help you keep track of what needs to be done so that you can ensure you do not fall behind.  Make a checklist of what items need to be completed a month before, a week before, a day before, and on moving day.

Packing Checklist
Packing is a tedious and strenuous task so it takes proper planning and organization.  Put together a list of everything you are going to need as far as packing supplies such as boxes, packing tape, packing paper, furniture covers, etc.  Then, make note of any items that will require special attention such as artwork, valuable, pool table, piano, or aquarium.  Finally, make a list of what needs to be packed in each room so you can be sure nothing gets left behind.

Moving Company Checklist
There are a lot of options when it comes to selecting the right moving company.  Putting together a list of what each company offers can help you decided which company is right for you.  Begin with in-home estimates to get an idea of what your overall move will cost.  Then, consider extra charges such as insurance, special items (playset, piano, aquarium, pool table, etc.)  Once you have decided on a company, make a list of everything you want them to do on moving day so you can be sure every detail is covered.

Housekeeping List
In addition to all moving all of your belongings, there are quite a few housekeeping items that need to be taken care of prior to moving.  Making a list of these items can help you remember what needs to be done.  Here are a few things to add to your list:

-File an official change of address

-Transfer utilities

-Transfer cable and internet

-Transfer school records for children

-Notify banks, credit card, any magazine subscriptions, and your employers of your new address
