There are a number of things that need to be taken into consideration when relocating from one place to another. You may ask questions such as, “What’s the moving budget going to look like? Where are we going to move? When are we going to move? How are we going to move?” Another question that often gets overlooked is when to keep your possessions versus when is it time to store them? In order to assist you with this daunting question, we have listed some tips and suggestions below for deciding whether you should keep or store your belongings.

Plan ahead- Do not wait until the last minute. If you know you are going to be faced with the dilemma of having to make a decision about what to keep and what to store, give yourself plenty of time to plan. Go through your possessions and determine what you will need in your home immediately and what can be stored. Once you have decided which items need to be stored, begin the process of selecting a suitable storage unit. Make sure you find a unit that can adequately accommodate your possessions. Doing this in advance will make moving day a breeze.

Size Matters- One of the first things you have to think about is the size of your new residence. Obviously, the larger your living area the more space you are going to have to store items. Make sure to store any extra items in such a way that disrupts your overall transition time and process as little as possible.

Sort Everything into Categories- Once everything is unpacked, sort everything into three piles. You should have a pile for everything you want to keep, store, or throw away. This will help you get an accurate visual representation of how much stuff you actually have and what to do with each item. This process may seem tedious, but it will be worth it in the long-run. This will allow you to get everything done in an efficient manner.

When in Doubt, Store it- If you ever catch yourself hesitating over a specific item as far as keeping or storing it, you should probably store it. If you find a flexible storage option, you should be able to retrieve whatever you need from your storage unit at any time without a problem.

Think about the Future- Learn from the past, live in the present, and think about the future. This is true in many aspects of life, including when it comes to moving and storage decisions. You obviously want to take your future lifestyle into account when you are thinking about keeping things in your home versus storing them. If you know you are going to be busy or out of town a lot, it is best to go with the storage option. As stated previously, when you store your belongings, they will remain safe and secure for as long as you need.
