Moving to a new city can be an exciting time in anyone’s life, full of new challenges and opportunities. Finding a new place to live, learning new street names, and changing your address, phone number, and vehicle tags are all things that must be taken into account when making this kind of transition. And of course, everyone wants to have a social life when they move to a new city, right? This often means that you have to put yourself out there, get out of your comfort zone at times, and meet new people. Listed below are several helpful tips to consider on how to meet new people when transitioning to a new city.

Visit the Local Coffee Shop- When you move to a new city where you hardly know anyone, consider having a cup of coffee at the local coffee shop. Why? While it may seem odd to have a cup of coffee alone, people tend to notice those who are sitting alone in public. With that said, it may entice certain people to come up to you and start a conversation, especially if you become a regular within a few weeks. Is this thinking outside the box? Sure, but if you choose to give it a try, it could be a great way to meet new people.

Always Say Yes- Once you meet a few people in your new city, always say yes when they ask to do something, if your schedule allows you to do so. This will give you the opportunity to not only build on the relationship you already have with them, but a potential chance to meet and network with new people as well. In essence, your initial friends can be some of your best assets when trying to expand your social network in a new city.

Look for Social Gatherings- Many cities have social gatherings available that allow new residents the opportunity to meet new people within their area that have similar jobs, interests, hobbies, etc. It’s a great idea to attend as many of these events as possible, especially if you would like to expand both your professional and personal networks.

Take the Initiative- Once you get to know a few people, be aggressive and take the initiative to try to find things for your group of friends to do together. This will allow you to continue to build stronger relationships, while becoming more familiar with the city.

Join a Social Group or Recreational Sports Team- Many cities have a variety of different social groups and recreational sports teams for people to join outside of their professional occupations. Whether it’s a recreational sport or a health club membership, social clubs outside of work are a great way to relieve stress while having fun with others.

When it comes to moving to a new city, meeting new people will help make the transition easier, less stressful, and much more enjoyable. It gives you an opportunity to expand your horizons and build potential long-lasting relationships, which could help you both professionally and personally.
