College Students: Tips for Moving Out of Your Dorm Room

by Dusty Rhodes | May 18, 2017

Dorm rooms are a big part of the overall college experience for thousands of college students across the country. The typical college dorm room is more commonly known as your home away from home during your early college career. Then there is that time of year, usually at the end of the spring semester, where the university you are attending makes you move out of the dorm for summer break.  When this time comes, you will want to be sure to make your move as easy and seamless as possible.  Below, we’ve listed some valuable tips that will help make the transition out of your dorm a success.

Start Early and Often- When you know that your dorm room move out date is approaching, remember the saying, “The earlier the better.” Most move out days occur in the beginning to the middle of May.  So with this in mind, it may be a good idea to start packing and transporting some things early if they are of no use, and you live within driving distance of your permanent residence.  This process will allow you to feel a lot less stressed on the actual move out day, all while making the entire experience less complicated and more convenient.

Raid the Refrigerator- The eating habits of many college students can often be characterized by eating at the local fast-food chains in order to eat quickly and fulfill all the demands of a busy lifestyle.  However, if you keep a mini fridge in your room, the time leading up to your move out date would be the perfect time to make sure it gets put to good use.  Eating all of your fridge food not only saves money, but also helps you get rid of everything before you move out. In our book, that’s a win-win situation.

Storage Containers and Facilities- “I don’t want to drag everything home for summer break, only to bring it back to school three months later. What can I do?” The answer is simple. Rent storage units or look into long-term storage facility options.  Moving and storage companies are known to offer spacious storage units that will keep everything well protected for a long period of time. It’s a great option to consider, especially for those who don’t have a ton of space waiting for them back at home.

Do an Empty Walk Through- Once everything is cleared out and your room is empty, it is always a good idea to do one last empty walk through.  This will help give you peace of mind by in making sure you did not forget anything.  Sometimes things tend to get lost in all the madness of moving; however, this step will help ensure that nothing gets left behind.

We are always looking to lend this group of customers a helping hand whenever we can, and we hope that the above tips were beneficial to many college students as they go about moving out of their dorm rooms.  If you would like more information about the services we offer, give our customer service team a call today at 1-877-627-8269.
