Moving across the country can be quite and adventure, but it can also be difficult for kids.  Imagine the shock they feel as they watch their favorite toys being packed into boxes, vans being loaded, and cars stuffed full of everything that was once in their home.  Now consider riding for hours on end into uncharted territory to their new home.  The combination of everything can leave them feeling nervous and emotional but not to worry.  There are some great ways to get your kids excited about their new home while keeping them entertained during the road trip.

Make the Trip an Adventure
If you are moving across the country chances are you are going to pass some top-notch tourist destinations or amazing natural wonders.  Why not make the road trip exciting and plan a few extra days for some amazing detours?  Whether you will be passing the Grand Canyon or driving near some sandy white beaches, you will make unbelievable memories if you slow down and take some time to enjoy the ride.

Choose Some Travel Toys
There are plenty of great travel toys to help pass the time and many of them are pretty inexpensive.  Aquadoodle boards, magnetic boards, coloring books, sticker books, and look and find books are just a few ideas.

Bring on the Snacks
It’s hard for your kids to be whining and complaining when their mouths are full!  This doesn’t mean you need to load them up on sugary treats.  You can pack plenty of healthy snacks that will keep their tummies full.

Get in the Backseat
Sometimes all it takes is a little face-to-face contact with mom or dad to keep your littlest passengers happy.  Play a game of patty-cake, peekaboo, or even some silly tickling to distract a fussy baby or toddler.

Crank up the Conversation
This is the perfect opportunity to talk with your kids about their new home.  Teach them some fun facts about their new city.  Tell them about all of the fun things there are to do in their new hometown.  Answer any questions they might have about their new house or school.  Not only will this help pass the time, but it will help to calm any fears or anxiety your children may have about the move.

Play Some Old-Fashioned Car Games
Everyone loves some good family fun!  Play a car game altogether such as “20 Questions,” the License Plate Game, I Spy, or engage in a family sing along.  Everyone will be laughing and having so much fun they will forget all about sitting in the car.

Take Advantage of Electronics
When all else fails, never underestimate the power of a good movie or video game.  Kids these days have the luxury of having games, movies, and cartoons literally at their fingertips.  Pop in a favorite movie or let them play a game on their tablet or portable gaming device.  You will be shocked at how quickly the time passes.

With the right mindset and a few must-have accessories, traveling across the country can be a fun and memorable experience for the entire family.  Aside from technology, there are plenty of other creative ways to keep the kids busy and mom and dad relaxed as they embark on their cross country adventure.
