College can be an exciting time for any young adult because it is full of new challenges and opportunities. Starting your college career often means moving away from home, meeting new people, and realizing what it feels like to truly get out of your comfort zone. One very important question that many students ask is, “Where am I going to live once I arrive on campus.” A number of students decide to live on campus either because that is their preference or because they are required to live in an on-campus dormitory for a certain length of time. Living in a dorm often means being confined to tight quarters with a person or group of people you may or may not know. So you are probably wondering, “How can I make the most out of my small living space?” Well, keep reading below for great storage tips that will help you do just that.

Put it in the Closet- Yes, this may seem like an obvious one, but that is what your closet is there for. Figure out ways to use your closet effectively in order to get the most out of the available space you have. There are even ways to keep things organized within your closet. One great option to consider would be to purchase closest dividers that allow you to organize your closet into specific sections.

Get a Dresser- Dressers are a great option when it comes to storing things effectively. You should take the size of your dorm room and the actual dimensions of the dresser into consideration before purchasing one for your room. Once you figure out the appropriate size, a dresser can be a very effective option to help avoid clutter and save space in your small living area.

Put it Under or Over the Bed- Growing up you were likely told that putting things under the bed is just another way to hide the messy clutter; however, when it comes to dorm living this is not the case. There are a number of effective ways in which the space under or over your bed can be used to neatly store items. Purchasing small storage bins that can be placed under the bed is an innovative way to save space in your dorm room. You might also be able to hang a small rack over your bed that will allow you the extra space needed to store more of your valuable possessions.

Use the Top of Your Desk- The top of your desk is also another useful storage option. Notebook paper, pens, pencils, laptops, and other school supplies would fit nicely on top of a desk. There are a number of desk organizers that you can purchase that will assist you with utilizing every inch of your desk space. You could also use the back of your desk chair to neatly hang jackets or sweaters when they are not being used.

Use the Back of a Door- If dorm rules allow you to do so, you can purchase hooks that can be placed on the back of your dorm room door. This space could serve as effective storage opportunity. You can use these hooks for hanging items that you will need to get to quickly right before you leave your room. Some great examples of this would be your keys, jacket, backpack or purse.

Rent a Storage Unit- When you have exhausted all the storage options that the inside of your living quarters will allow, renting a storage unit is an effective short or long term option. Try to find a storage unit that can be flexible as far as price is concerned, but one that will provide enough space and protection for your belongings. Some companies offer long-term options at their storage facilities. Your things will remain safe and secure until you are ready to retrieve them.
