Houston vs. Dallas: Where Should You Move?

by Dusty Rhodes | Apr 07, 2021

Are you planning a move to Texas? If so, you aren’t alone. The Lone Star State is the second most populous state in the country and each year it attracts thousands of newcomers. The warm weather, diverse population, and booming economy make it a desirable place for many people.

So, while you may have decided on the state, choosing the specific city to move to might be a bit more difficult. If you have narrowed your choices to Houston and Dallas, you might be wondering which one will be the right choice for you. Located just 240 miles apart, these two cities each have their own unique characteristics and distinct differences.

Although both cities have plenty of amenities and exciting things to do, it’s important to take a closer look at each city so you can decide which one will suit you best.

Living in Houston

Houston is the 4th largest city in the U.S. and one of the fastest growing cities in the country. It’s thriving economy combined with a low cost of living make Houston a desirable place to start a career or raise a family. It is a dynamic city full of energy, friendly people, and great food. Let’s check out a few reasons why so many people are flocking to Houston.

Job Opportunities: Houston is the number one city for new jobs and there are plenty of opportunities for employment. With booming oil and gas, aerospace, medical, and tech industries, Houston is a perfect market for engineers, scientists, and medical professionals. It is also a fantastic city for startups and entrepreneurs.

Medical Facilities: Houston is home to the largest medical center in the world, where graduates from the most prestigious colleges come to work at its world-renowned hospitals.

Affordability: For a large metro area, Houston is among the most affordable cities. The average home price is just under $200k, making it possible for families to afford their own home. The vast amount of land in the Houston area also makes it possible for development, which helps to lower housing costs. In addition to lower housing costs, there is no state income tax for Texas residents. Overall, the cost of living in Houston is about 5% cheaper than Dallas.

Great Schools: If you are moving with children, you will be glad to know that Houston boasts distinguished school districts, colleges, and universities. The Houston Independent School District is the largest in the state and has earned many accolades and awards. There are also a number of top-rated universities including Rice University and the University of Houston.

Entertainment: Houston is known for its legendary food scene. In addition to its delicious barbecue and Tex-Mex, you will find a variety of foods and restaurants from around the world. Featuring everything from world-class dining to delicious street food, the Houston culinary scene is something to brag about. In addition to great food, Houston is home to professional sports teams, excellent shopping, and the famous Houston Rodeo and Livestock Show, the largest rodeo in the country. There are also dozens of museums and attractions including the Space Center and the Downtown Aquarium.

Living in Dallas

Like Houston, Dallas is one of the fastest growing cities in America thanks to its tremendous job growth. It offers all of the luxuries one would expect from a big city, with plenty of space to enjoy a relaxed and spacious lifestyle. From its exciting downtown to its numerous restaurants and activities, you will never run out of new things to discover in Dallas. Here are just a few of the perks of living in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs: Much like Houston, Dallas has a thriving job market thanks to massive corporations that have made their headquarters in the area. Companies such as American Airlines, ExxonMobil, Frito-Lay, JCPenney, and Southwest Airlines have chosen Dallas as their home base. Healthcare jobs are also quite prevalent, as are startup businesses. Not only are your chances of landing a job pretty great in this city, but you can expect to get paid for it. Dallas ranks third in the country for highest salaries.

Cost of Living: Dallas is certainly nothing compared to cities like San Francisco and New York, but it will cost you a bit more than Houston. That said, it is still considered pretty affordable for a major metropolitan city, with average rent prices around $1500 and median home prices around $220,000.

Amazing Food: Dallas is also home to some pretty incredible food. Every neighborhood in the city offers its own unique eateries featuring local flavors. From its famous tacos to mouthwater Texas staples like chili and barbecue, the Dallas food scene will not disappoint.

Better Weather: While it's no secret that Houston and Dallas both get their fair share of warm weather, Dallas is definitely more bearable overall. Thanks to its location slightly further north, Dallas gets a little break from the intense summer heat for a few months out of the year and the humidity is not as uncomfortable as Houston.

Plenty to Do: It's no secret that Dallas residents love their sports! With teams like the Cowboys and the Mavericks, Dallas is a great city for sports lovers. It also offers a great arts and culture scene, excellent shopping, and plenty of fun attractions.

Deciding Where to Move

Relocating to a new city is both exciting and a little scary at the same time. There are so many things to consider such as jobs, neighborhoods, schools, and lifestyle. The good news is that both of these cities offer some incredible amenities that are attractive to many people. It simply comes down to choosing the city that feels right for you. Whether you choose Houston or Dallas, you can expect to be welcomed to the Lone Star State with friendly people and some great Texas food!
