The Impact Coronavirus has on the Moving Process

by Dusty Rhodes | May 13, 2020

The coronavirus has impacted nearly every aspect of our lives and has caused people to rethink the way they are moving. Though the country is calling for social distancing and home quarantines, moves aren’t always something that can wait. For many people, their moving date is not flexible and they need to find a way to navigate this process even during a global pandemic. Here are just some of the ways coronavirus has impacted the moving process and how you can still find a way to move safely during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Scheduling Movers and Storage Rentals

Services and business that are considered “essential” have been given the green light to remain open and this includes the moving industry. That said, many people are hesitant to invite a group of movers into their home to expose their family to potential harm. Furthermore, many professional moving companies have decided to suspend services or change moving dates. As a result, homeowners are left scrambling to find a safe way to move. Fortunately, portable storage companies are still operating and provide a safe alternative to traditional moving services.

Moving While Social Distancing

Moving is a challenging task in the best of times, but add social distancing to the equation and it can seem almost impossible. Hiring professional movers is not exactly the safest option for moving during this time. Nor is this the time to enlist the help of family, friends, and neighbors. It can be difficult to minimize contact when you have a team of movers in and out of your home. Portable storage companies, however, can provide a safer alternative. You can have these containers delivered directly to your home without ever coming into contact with anyone. You have the flexibility to pack and load your belongings at your leisure and then schedule a time to have them transported to your new home. Only you will be handling your belongings and there is no interaction with workers at any point during the moving process.

Gathering Moving Supplies

Now is not the time to be gathering boxes from local grocery stores, hardware stores, liquor stores, and warehouses. Studies have found that the coronavirus can live on cardboard for up to 24 hours and three days on plastic. At this time, your best bet is to purchase new moving boxes and supplies.

Cleaning and Sanitation

No matter how you choose to move, make sure you are following CDC guidelines for cleaning and sanitation. Wipe down all boxes that come into contact with others. Sanitize your storage unit by wiping down the door handle and lock before and after each use. Continue social distancing and avoid close contact with others (including movers.)Wash your hands regularly and be sure to thoroughly clean and sanitize your new home before moving your belongings inside.
