The Moving Lingo You Need to Know

by Dusty Rhodes | Mar 16, 2017

If you have ever experienced a move or you are in the process of experiencing one, your movers may be speaking, from what it seems, a foreign language to you. What exactly do they mean when they use technical terms to describe the moving and storage process? In the material below, we break down some of the more commonly used moving and storage lingo to better help you understand every aspect of your experience.

Booking Agent- This is the person that processes the order request involved with your particular moving or storage needs. This is more commonly referred to by some moving companies as a customer service representative or customer service specialist. They are often some of the first people you speak with, and it is their job to answer and explain the company’s core values, benefits, and services to you.

Carrier- This is a term used to describe the mover or company whom you’ve hired to move your belongings to a new location. When searching for a carrier, try to find an organization that is flexible, versatile, and will operate at your pace and time schedule.

Line Haul Charges- This is often times an additional fee that is charged for any transportation needs during the moving process. More than likely, transportation needs are going to be a part of your move at some point. There are many companies that offer free transportation to their customers as part of their service packages. Not only will this be easier for you financially, but it will also take the stress off from having to transport your things from one place to another. Relax, and let the experienced transportation professionals handle it for you.

Elevator Carry/Flight Charge- This describes an additional fee used to compensate movers for extra labor that may be required to move items up or down an elevator or flight of stairs. Some companies may choose to charge you extra for having to put extra time and labor into having to go passed the first floor. However, there are some companies that offer a no-hidden fee approach for their services, and you’ll know exactly what is expected financially throughout your entire experience, no matter how large your home may be.

Carrier Liability- In the event something goes wrong or damage occurs to your items while being moved, this term describes the level of responsibility a company will take to correct the problem. In order to protect themselves and further insure customer satisfaction, some moving and storage companies may offer some form of transportation insurance as part of the overall cost for their services.

We hope that the above information has allowed you to better understand some of the lingo that is involved with the moving and storage process.
