Moving is an exciting experience, one that brings the opportunity to see new places and experience different parts of the world. Yet moving often means packing up from familiar places, family and friends,  and making the adjustment to settling into a new place away from what you know.  If you are in the process of moving, and your new location will be long distance from your family, here are a few tips that will help you to adjust to being apart from your family.

Stay Connected

Staying in touch with your family is important after you move. This is especially the case if your relocation has taken you several miles away from your family. Keeping in contact allows you to adjust, as well as your family members. Set aside time as you get settled into your new place to make phone calls or reach out via webcam so you can talk and see your family members’ faces. Send photos so that your family members can see you and have them to do the same. By simply staying connected on a regular basis, you will find that the adjustment of your move will be a lot easier, and help make the distance and miles a little easier to deal with.

Visit

Recognizing that it can sometimes be hard to take off work or get vacation time off right after you move, utilize the days you do have off and try to plan times to visit your family. From short weekend trips, to convenient times within your schedule, off days can become a great time to get away and spend time with your family.

Visiting also works both ways. If you are unable to get time away, invite your family out to visit you. After all, chances are they may have more available time off, and they can visit you for a longer period of time. Visits will help you to adjust and remind you that you are never too far away to see your family.

Find Travel Deals

Traveling can be expensive, yet it is still possible. If you decide you are going to visit your family around the holidays, plan ahead and get a good rate on airline tickets or rental car fees. Waiting until the last minute raises the possibility of getting closed out of a flight or not getting a good price on your travel expenses. Proper planning and preparation will allow you to experience time with your family, and help you to enjoy time with them when you can.

Care Packages

Every now and then, send a gift to your family to remind them that you are thinking of them. After all, the move is probably a hard adjustment for them too. By sending a reminder of something special or significant to your family, that will help remind them too that you are not far away, and they can do the same for you. It’s amazing how special a gift from home is, especially if it is homemade or can only be found where you are from. It can make all the difference in helping you to adjust to moving away from your family.

Hopefully, these tips will help you if you are about to move away from family, or you are planning to. For more information on moving tips or additional moving resources, please visit our Moving page.
